COUNTER-TARIFFS: Wide range of U.S. goods hit with new import fee

Get ready to pay more for American-made imports of beauty products, golf clubs, fishing rods, exercise equipment, refrigerators and smartphones.
The Canadian government’s wide-ranging list of 629 items hit with counter-tariffs worth $27.6 billion came into effect Tuesday, and also targets the U.S. dairy, clothing, steel, and pulp and paper industries.
The Department of Finance said retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% are matching the U.S. rate for the same Canadian goods targeted by President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs invoked last month under U.S. Section 338 and Section 232.
“There’s always a cost to action, but it doesn’t come close to the cost of standing still,” Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday in a video message to Canadians .
“This is about who we are as Canadians. It’s about our livelihoods and the country we’ll leave to our kids. The truth is, adversity only makes us stronger, it always has.”

Steel and appliances
Tariffs on 275 American iron and steel products, or items containing those metals, doubled from the 25% rate set last December to 50% effective Tuesday.
Items targeted include railway or tramway track construction material, scaffolding equipment, flat-rolled products, pipes, bars and rods, wire, nails, screws, nuts, bolts, chains, sewing needles and safety pins.
Products hit with 25% tariffs include cooking appliances such as stoves, ranges and cast iron grilles and their parts, radiators for heating buildings, iron or steel wool such as pot scourers, and stainless steel sinks and wash basins.
Laundry washing and drying machines and assorted parts are also getting hit with 25% tariffs.
Dairy goods
Imports of American milk, cream, cheese and curd are also increasing in price within and over limits of the current Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement commitments.
Milk and cream in powder form, milk protein substances, and whey protein concentrate and powder are all affected with 25% and 50% tariffs.
Agricultural equipment
Under harvesting or threshing machinery, powered mowers for lawns, parks or sports grounds with the cutting device rotating in a horizontal plane are hit with 25% tariffs.
Other mowers, including cutter bars for tractor mounting and parts, are now tagged with 15% tariffs.
Clothing
Shirts, dresses, suits and raincoats made in the U.S. are being targeted with 50% tariffs beginning Tuesday.
More specifically, women’s and girls’ dresses of man-made or synthetic fibres as well as other textile materials, saris (South Asian draped garments), and other garments.
For men and boys, overcoats, raincoats, capes, cloaks and other similar clothing of man-made fibres, suits, jackets, blazers and trousers made of wool or fine animal hair, knitted or crocheted cotton shirts, and other garments made of cotton or man-made fibres.
Pulp and paper products
Going to the washroom just got more expensive.
Imports of American toilet paper, as well as facial tissue, paper towel, napkins and serviettes are being tagged with a 50% tariff rate.
Paper, envelopes and stationery are also on the Canadian government’s list. Those include notepads, diaries, kraft paper, receipt books, folders and binders.
Electronic goods
Video game consoles and machines made in the U.S. are being hit with 50% tariffs.
In addition, smartphones and machines for the reception, conversion and transmission or regeneration of voice, images or other data, including switching and routing apparatus are targeted as well.
Sporting equipment
If you are into golfing, fishing or exercise, expect to pay more for American-made products.
Golf clubs and other golf equipment, fishing rods, and general physical exercise equipment are getting tariffed at 50%.
Other items
The Canadian government is retaliating against American natural honey, perfumes and colognes, and beauty products and make-up for hair, lips and eyes as well as manicure or pedicure preparation.
Imports of furniture for domestic use made of metal, wood or plastic is also being targeted.
