Dodgers Recall Streaky Right-Hander to Boost Rotation

The Los Angeles Dodgers have recalled right-handed starter Emmet Sheehan from Triple-A Oklahoma City, the team announced on Monday. Sheehan will take left-hander Eric Lauer‘s spot in the starting rotation after the latter went on the injured list with elbow inflammation. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers optioned right-hander Bobby Miller to Triple-A.

Miller pitched three innings in relief on Sunday night. He got his first win since August 2024. Traditionally a starter, Miller has made the move to the long relief role. It appears to have worked in the Dodgers’ favor.
Working Out the Kinks
Sheehan has struggled this season at the big-league level. Across 20 starts, he has an ERA of 5.29. It’s a stark contrast to 2025, when the youngster was a stalwart member of the starting rotation last year. He opened so many eyes that he was rumored to be on the wish list of Dodgers potential trade partners. However, 2026 has been a different story. The right-hander has struggled with the velocity and location of his fastball. As a result, he has given up more than his fair share of home runs. The Dodgers ruled out ineffectiveness due to injury and sent him to the minors.

The right-hander has seemingly turned it around in a hitter-friendly league. Sheehan won the Pacific Coast League’s Pitcher of the Month. His ERA was a minuscule 1.50 in four starts with 24 strikeouts.
He’s Back
Shohei Ohtani is back in the lineup tonight as the Dodgers open up a series against the Cincinnati Reds. The baseball unicorn has been resting a sore knee. Ohtani has avoided a trip to the IL, at least for now. Because of his two-way status, he would have been required to miss 15 days instead of 10. The Dodgers were running out of time to backdate the time on the IL. Ohtani was hitting below a .15o for the months of August and September. The chances of him pitching in the postseason don’t look very good.
The Last Word
With just weeks left in the regular season, the Dodgers have some important decisions ahead about the postseason roster. Even with Ohtani unavailable, chances are that Sheehan doesn’t make the starting rotation in October. However, he could be a long relief option out of the bullpen if he capitalizes on his second shot with the Dodgers. Los Angeles has been in need of right-handed relief options. Sheehan could force the Dodgers’ hand if he can be effective. It will be interesting to see what happens.
