Fan Optimism in Jaguars Among Highest in the NFL

For a team coming off a terrific 13-win season, the national sports media hasn't seemed very optimistic about the Jacksonville Jaguars this year.

Jacksonville still has a lot to prove, and more success will be necessary before the majority of analysts start taking the team seriously as a contender.

Most of the doubt has centered around the Jaguars' offseason, which has been relentlessly criticized. The common belief is that Jacksonville didn't do enough to replace running back Travis Etienne and linebacker Devin Lloyd, who left in free agency.

Fair or not, concerns about the running backs and offensive line are weighing down confidence in this team. 

Bill Barnwell of ESPN named Jacksonville as one of the NFL teams most likely to decline this year, citing the defense's reliance on creating turnovers and the high number of backup quarterbacks the Jaguars played against as being key parts of their success last season but aren't likely to be sustainable this year.

While the Jaguars may be receiving their fair share of skepticism from analysts, fan optimism in the club is near the top of the league.

The Athletic surveyed fans of all 32 NFL teams, asking if they felt optimistic about their team for the upcoming season. The Los Angeles Rams, already a great team before trading for Myles Garrett and Aaron Donald coming out of retirement, unsurprisingly led the way, with 98.7% of fans expressing optimism.

As one might expect, the Cleveland Browns brought up the rear. Only 2.7% of Browns fans believe this season will be successful.

The Jaguars landed near the very top of the ranking with 92.4% of fans optimistic, good for sixth-highest.

Reasons For Hope Plus A Couple Of Concerns

One of the biggest reasons for hope and optimism is the expected growth in Year 2 under head coach Liam Coen. In 2025, the Jaguars got much better as the season went along, clearly a sign that the players were getting more comfortable and had a better understanding of Coen's system. 

As for reasons to be pessimistic, Jacksonville will not be able to surprise anyone this year. The Jaguars are now the hunted instead of the hunter, a role they are not very familiar with. They have not made the playoffs in consecutive seasons this century.

"Optimist: The culture changed last year. One year under Coen’s leadership will continue to build a more consistent team able to win the close games.

"Pessimist: Because the Jags can never be good two years in a row or perform when they’re the hunted instead of the hunter.

"Optimist: We won the division and 13 games, and we didn't even hit our potential until November. Trevor Lawrence is playing at an MVP level now, and our entire coaching staff is elite.

"Pessimist: Hit the best possible outcomes in a lot of situations last season, lost key pieces and had a rough draft.

"Optimist: DUUUUVALLL!"

Final Thoughts

The Jaguars are more talented this season than they have been in quite some time. There are plenty of reasons for the fans to be optimistic.

Media concerns will persist until the team begins to prove itself by winning.

Hopefully, opening the season against the team that has earned the least amount of optimism means the Jaguars will get off to a great start.
