With Mike McDaniel taking over as offensive coordinator, Herbert has a fresh system designed to maximize his arm talent and create more scoring opportunities. The 28-year-old quarterback is in his seventh year and is looking to build on his laudable campaign last season, earning him a second nod to the Pro Bowl.

When asked about Herbert’s “comfort level” with the new system, McDaniel had another all-time response.

“Either incredibly comfortable or he needs to hit up the Actors Guild, because he’s selling it,” said McDaniel in a media conference.

The 43-year-old tactician is known for his eccentric personality, and his latest comment on Herbert added to his long list of golden quotes that make any TED Talk sound like a late-night infomercial.

McDaniel and Herbert quickly formed a solid bond in training camp, publicly expressing their mutual admiration. Coach John Harbaugh could not help but gush about the odd pairing, especially their combined energy and thought process.

“I always thought it was a great fit with Justin. Both those guys are so smart, and it’s even better than I thought. We can talk about all the football reasons, and that’s really why it’s a great fit. Justin’s accuracy, Mike’s vision of football and timing, and receivers out of the break? That’s Justin,” said Harbaugh, who said he eyed McDaniel as soon as he was the former was fired by the Miami Dolphins.

The Chargers will host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
