WILLARD — The Lucas Cubs last competed in a football conference in 2012, with the North Central Conference.

That changed this year when they joined the Northern 10 conference. They fell to Carey last week in their first conference matchup, but Week 4 brought different results.

They traveled to Willard and came home with a 28-22 victory over the Flashes. It's the first conference win for Lucas as a member of the N10.

“We’ve played two really good football teams the past two weeks in Hillsdale and Carey. We’re proud of how we played tonight, and that’s a pretty solid football team over there, and that’s one heck of a quarterback. He caused us problems all night long,” said Lucas Head Coach Jim Sweat.

To no one’s surprise, the Cubs leaned on their run game. Brady Anschutz finished with 14 carries for 143 yards. Brady Guegold carried it 21 times for 134 yards. They each had a touchdown. Carter Cox and Cooper Day added the other two touchdowns also on the ground.

“That was the gameplan this week,” said Sweat. “Play good defense and then control the tempo on offense. And to limit possessions.”

It was Willard who struck first by a Marshall Robinson touchdown with 8:03 remaining in the first quarter, but it wasn’t able to score again until 4:04 in the third.

Willard junior quarterback Jacob Rothaar did everything in his power to bring home a Willard win. He was 15-for-21 for 134 yards passing, while adding 133 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He even had a 19-yard reception on the final play. He also picked off a pass defensively.

“I thought he really grew up as a player in the second half. We challenged him at halftime to use his feet in the pass game when he needed to. He played really well and we’re proud of him,” said Willard head coach Eli Fisher.

The Flashes took over with about 40 seconds to go in the game but weren’t able to put together a game-winning drive. Marshall Robinson helped Rothaar’s offensive sparks by adding 42 rushing yards and a score, and 49 receiving yards as well. Willard falls to 2-2 and travels to 3-1 Seneca East next week.

“We’re proud of how our kids played tonight regardless of the scoreboard. I’d say it's not getting any easier with Seneca East next week, but we will have to clean up the little things,” said Fisher.

Lucas improves to 2-2 on the season. They take on winless Tiffin Calvert at home next week as it looks to continue a conference play win streak.

“Obviously something to build on this week. We could be better up front on both sides of the ball. We’ve got to be able to throw the ball a little bit, so we have to work on that for next week,” said Sweat.
