The Guadalajara 2026 organizing committee gathered for the final time to hold this ceremony, bringing to life the vision that Jorge Vergara (RIP) had more than 20 years ago, when he envisioned the construction of the Rojiblanco Fortress.
Amaury Vergara, president of Club Deportivo Guadalajara, led the unveiling ceremony and fondly remembered his father, who envisioned a stadium ready to welcome the world from the moment the Rebaño’s home was built.
“I can’t help but think about my dad, who envisioned this stadium as a World Cup venue. Hosting this event was an incredible experience.”
“To me, this plaque is much more than a new decoration for the stadium. It means so much, and I think about what it will mean in the years to come. I’m incredibly proud to remember everything that was experienced in our home, not only as an experience, but also all the work that went on behind the scenes by my team, whom I’m extremely proud of.”
During the ceremony, Jürgen Mainka, Director of the FIFA Office in Mexico, recognized the effort made by Chivasthroughout the preparation and renovation process that helped the stadium stand out as one of the 16 best host venues.
“Today, FIFA is here to thank this entire team for their work. On behalf of FIFA Mexico, I want to thank you, and it’s not just about the effort made by all of you,” he emphasized.
Pablo Lemus, Governor of Jalisco, highlighted Jorge Vergara’s vision throughout the entire process and even called for recognition of the key role he played in making not only the World Cup’s return to Guadalajara possible, but also in helping Mexico secure hosting rights for the third time.
“The task seemed complicated, and the question was inevitable: Was it really possible? Jorge Vergara had the answer. It definitely is possible. Let it be recorded in the annals of soccer that the person who made it possible for the World Cup to come here for a third time was Jorge Vergara, as one of his many legacies for Jalisco and Guadalajara.”
