‘Missed the Part Where They Were Laughing’: Falcons Fans Torch Tua Tagovailoa’s ‘Uninterested’ Sideline Moment

· Yahoo Sports

The Atlanta Falcons opened the 2026 season with a 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa didn’t play in the game due to an injury, but he is still facing backlash. An oblique injury he suffered in practice ruled him out days before kickoff, with coach Kevin Stefanski calling him week-to-week and handing the start to veteran Cooper Rush.

Tagovailoa was sitting on the sideline next to fellow quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who was also inactive while continuing his recovery from a torn ACL. Their exchange in the fourth quarter set off a wave of negative chatter across the Falcons fan community.

The whole thing blew up on social media thanks to a screenshot posted by an X account named @Carrie_ATL. In the image, Tagovailoa could be seen leaning back against some equipment cases in a team hoodie, casually chatting with Penix.

What really set fans off was the broadcast clock in the corner: it was a crucial 3rd-and-5 with just eight minutes left in the game, and Atlanta was trailing 20-13. The post didn’t even have a caption but it racked up over a million views within a short time.

It landed hard because of the context. The Falcons were down late in a game they actually had a chance to win, but their two highest-paid quarterbacks looked like they were not interested at all.

Tua Tagovailoa, Michael Penix Jr. under fire for laughing on sideline

Fans on X didn’t waste any time sharing their frustration over the two quarterbacks chilling on the sideline without a care.

One fan wrote, “You missed the part where they were laughing.”

Another added, “Just over there smiling and having a good time.”

A third fan posted, “I was actually pissed seeing this and then laughing. Cant lie lol.”

One user bluntly asked, “So who do you guys want the Falcons to DRAFT at QB next year?”

The fifth fan claimed, “I hated this. These boys look so uninterested.”

However, Rush finished his Falcons debut going 12-of-22 for 143 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, good for a 51.9 passer rating. The game slipped away from Atlanta in the second quarter when Pittsburgh outscored them 10-0, creating a deficit a late Falcons push couldn’t close. With Tagovailoa week-to-week and Penix still recovering from his knee injury, Stefanski hasn’t named a Week 2 starter, leaving Atlanta’s quarterback situation completely unsettled heading into next week.
