Indiana Fever standout Sophie Cunningham had her message loud and clear for the forthcoming WNBA commissioner and what he or she needs to prioritise after taking over the role.
The current WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced earlier this month that she will step down from her role in December 2026, meaning it will come at the end of the ongoing WNBA season after seven years at the helm.

With several names coming up for who will take over the role from Engelbert, the decision has yet to be made about who will be the next boss. Amid this, Cunningham has made her intentions clear about what the upcoming official should do.

A video shared by James Boyd showed Cunningham being asked what the next commissioner should do, to which Cunningham said the league needs someone who can unite people.
“The WNBA has always been a place for people to feel safe and comfortable. I think there are all types of walks in this league which I think is absolutely awesome. But I think you need someone who’s gonna unite everybody because it can be so different but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing I think it makes it a lot of fun,” Cunningham said.
She further added that the next boss should have a growth mindset and be able to unite the league despite the diversity it offers.
“You continue to have a growth mindset and see other people’s walks of life and really get to know why they are the way they are and I think that’s truly fun. You’re in the best league in the entire world, you are getting to learn so much about who you are as a human. With all diversity you need someone to unite our league and have a common goal,” she added.
The 30-year-old also added that the league needs a commissioner who puts players first and wants to build a relationship with them, as it is the most important part.
With that said, Cunningham has made her intentions clear and given the next commissioner a heads-up about what they need to do after taking over the role.
