Man charged in massive vehicle break-in spree in Mississauga

Someone’s been busy — allegedly.
Peel Regional Police have charged a 34-year-old man in connection with 71 vehicle break-ins in Mississauga following an extensive investigation.
The incidents occurred during the early morning hours of Sept. 3 and Sept. 6 and targeted neighbourhoods throughout the city.
Investigators allege the suspect entered vehicles by either smashing windows or taking advantage of unlocked doors and stole valuables.
While no vehicles were stolen and all of them were unoccupied at the time, the incidents resulted in significant property damage and financial losses for residents.
Cory Lowden, 34, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with 46 counts of attempt to commit an indictable offence, 16 counts of theft under $5,000, 15 counts of mischief over $5,000 and one count of theft over $5,000.
Lowden was also arrested on two outstanding warrants related to separate fraud investigations. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
There may also be connections to vehicle crime throughout GTA
Investigators are looking into possible connections to similar vehicle crime investigations in Halton, Toronto, York and Waterloo as they try to determine the full scope of the accused’s alleged activities.
“This arrest sends a clear message that individuals who target our communities will be aggressively pursued and held accountable,” said Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah in a statement.
“Through determined investigative work, our officers were able to identify and arrest a suspect believed to be responsible for these incidents. Thank you to our community members who reported these crimes, allowing our officers to link them together.”

A week ago, four teenagers were charged with 229 offences as part of Project Magenta — an investigation into numerous stolen vehicles and commercial break-and-enters across Durham Region and the GTA between June and September.
