The Cleveland Guardians are pushing toward the postseason. They are in first place in the American League Central standings as of this story’s writing, but the ball club is in a competitive race with the Chicago White Sox for the division lead. In all reality, the Guardians’ real nightmare scenario would be missing the postseason altogether. If Cleveland reaches the playoffs, though, what would be the team’s nightmare seeding and matchup scenarios?
Potential scenarios
The two division winners with the best records in each league automatically earn byes in the first round of the postseason. Although the current best records in the American League belong to three AL East ball clubs, only the Tampa Bay Rays — who lead the division — would earn a bye at the moment.
The Guardians have a better record than the leader of the AL West, meaning they would also have a bye if the season ended today. Cleveland’s dream postseason scenario will be to earn a bye and play the winner of the No. 6 seed vs. No. 3 seed Wild Card series.

Cleveland would be in a fairly respectable position even if they fail to win the AL Central but reach the postseason as a Wild Card team, though. The No. 6 seed plays the No. 3 seed as mentioned. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, who hold the top two Wild Card spots and will be the No. 4 and No. 5 overall seeds barring unforeseen circumstances, have to go head-to-head.
Avoiding the Yankees and Red Sox in the first round will be a win for whichever team lands that No. 6 overall seed. Instead, the No. 6 seed has to play the No. 3 seed, which will likely either be the Texas Rangers or Houston Astros. Both of those teams have serious question marks and won’t represent the most intimidating postseason matchup — although the Astros’ star-power makes them an enticing ball club.
So, are the No. 2 and No. 6 seeds the only realistic outcomes for the Guardians in the 2026 postseason? Not necessarily.
The winner of the AL West could still surpass the winner of the AL Central, meaning either the Astros or Rangers would land the bye and the Guardians or White Sox would play as the No. 3 seed. As far as the Wild Card is concerned, the Guardians would not be able to surpass the Yankees for the No. 1 spot if they end up in the Wild Card. Their chances of surpassing the Red Sox for the No. 2 spot would also be slim.
Guardians will want to avoid this team
So, the Guardians’ most realistic seeding scenarios for the playoffs are ending up in the postseason as the No. 2, No. 6 or No. 3 seed. While having to face the White Sox in the first round may not be the most appealing matchup, Cleveland’s nightmare scenario would be reaching the Wild Card round as the No. 6 seed and having to play the Astros.
The Astros are the team Cleveland will want to avoid in the Wild Card round. They are arguably the most dangerous possible opponents in that scenario. Of course, avoiding the Yankees and Red Sox in the Wild Card round would be crucial, but we are looking at the most realistic possibilities.
The good news is that the Guardians will get to avoid the AL East teams until the ALCS regardless of whether they end up as the No. 2, No. 3 or No. 6 seed. It goes without saying, but the No. 2 seed is the best scenario, as it would give Cleveland a bye and home field advantage in the ALDS.
