The Election Commission on Friday allotted new names and symbols to the two factions of the Trinamool Congress, reported ANI.
The group led by Mamata Banerjee was assigned the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” with the symbol “football player”.
The Arup Roy faction of the party was allotted the name of “Democratic Trinamool Congress” with the envelope as its symbol, reported ANI.
This came a day after the poll panel had barred both factions of the TMC from using the party’s name as well as the “flowers and grass” symbol in the upcoming Assembly bye-polls on October 6.
The factions were asked to submit alternative names and symbols for the Nandigram and Rejinagar bye-elections by 11 am on Friday.
The Election Commission had passed similar orders after the split of the Shiv Sena in 2022 and the Nationalist Congress Party in 2023.
In its order on Friday, the Election Commission said that the nomination papers filed by the candidates of both the TMC factions for the bye-polls will be considered if all the other requirements are fulfilled by them.
