New PowerBall rule has made five South Africans MEGA rich

Last Friday’s PowerBall Xtra jackpot rolled over again, with it now sitting at an estimated R17 million ahead of this Tuesday’s draw.
Buried in the game’s rules, though, is a significant clause many players may well have never heard of.

Since Sizekhaya took over as National Lottery operators on 1 June 2026, PowerBall Xtra has included a “cascade clause”.
If there’s no winner in the final PowerBall draw of the calendar month, the jackpot doesn’t roll over again.
Instead, the entire prize automatically drops down and splits among the next-highest winning division.
HOW THE CASCADE CLAUSE WORKS
Under the PowerBall rules, an unclaimed jackpot simply rolls over to the next draw. This grows the prize, while the odds of winning stay the same.
However, the cascade clause changes things for the PowerBall Xtra.
If the final PowerBall Xtra draw of a calendar month – whether it be on a Tuesday or Friday – doesn’t produce a winner, the entire jackpot pool cascades down to whoever matched the next-highest combination.
This guarantees the money gets won, rather than continuing to roll over indefinitely.
This has happened every month since Sizekhaya took over.
On 30 June 2026, an estimated R139 million PowerBall Xtra jackpot triggered the cascade for the first time since the National Lottery began in 2000.
Three ticket holders, each having matched five numbers, but missing the PowerBall bonus ball, ended up splitting the entire pool between them.
Each walked away with R45 733 457.30.
The winning tickets were bought at a Checkers Hyper in Alberton and through the Standard Bank and FNB banking apps.
Sizekhaya’s Chief Operating Officer, Fundi Sithebe, called it a landmark moment for the National Lottery at the time.
She added that rather than another rollover, the jackpot had found three homes instead.
Then on 31 July, one lucky player scooped R23 810 456.50 after he – or she – was the only player to pick the five correct numbers after no one picked the five numbers plus bonus ball.
On 28 August, once again, one player walked away R21 062 766.20 richer after they also picked the five correct numbers without the bonus ball after no one had done so in last month’s final draw.
That’s five players who have become multimillionaires who previously wouldn’t have been catapulted onto South Africa’s richest list.
Other changes
Beyond the cascade clause itself, Sizekhaya introduced several other changes when it took over the National Lottery.
PowerBall’s own ticket price rose from R5 to R10, while PowerBall Xtra rose from R2.50 to R5.
The PowerBall number pool was also reduced from 20 to 16 numbers, genuinely improving the odds of matching the PowerBall itself and winning the jackpot outright.
With PowerBall Xtra’s current rollover streak still building, it’s worth watching whether there is a winner before the jackpot will be paid out in September’s final draw on Tuesday, 29 September.
I find rules like this genuinely fascinating once you actually understand them.
It’s a small structural tweak, but it fundamentally changes the story a rollover streak can tell.
