Wirtz was supposed to become one of the best players in the world. He was supposed to take Liverpool by storm and become the new superstar at and darling of The Kop.
But fast-forward his first year, and now into his second, things are not going according to plan for the German.
Wirtz has not been able to replicate his form from the Bundesliga in the Premier League. He doesn't look like the same player the Reds signed.
Why Florian Wirtz is really struggling at Liverpool
The truth is that Liverpool haven't properly platformed Wirtz. He is a player who is confident playing in between the lines but he needs players around him to support his actions.
He also needs the ball to be played into him quickly. A lot of the times, Liverpool dither on the ball. They don't have ball playing midfielders who are able to release the ball quickly, that Wirtz had around him at Bayer Leverkusen.
This has limited Wirtz's impact. A lot of the time, he's getting the ball a fraction too late or in deeper areas of the pitch where you're not going to see his best self.
It's why on top of the fact that Liverpool have not performed very well that Wirtz has struggled. There might be a remedy if the Reds platform him properly but there is also an easier solution.
Why Paris Brunner can replace Florian Wirtz
Recently, reports have emerged that Wirtz is attracting the attention of Bayern Munich. The Germans will naturally be prepared to pay big, or could use Michael Olise as a bait to sell the Frenchman to Liverpool in return for Wirtz.
It would make a lot of sense considering there is a real void on the right-wing.
And as for who replaces Wirtz in the middle?
Well, the solution is already clear. Liverpool scouts have been keeping a close eye on Paris Brunner this season attending almost all of his matches in the campaign so far as revealed exclusively by Anfield Watch.
Brunner plays as the no.9 but a bit like a false nine for Monaco. In the past, the U17 World Cup winner has played as a centre-forward and as an attacking midfielder behind a striker.
Considering Liverpool's attacking positions are sorted with Isak and Hugo Ekitike, it feels a lot more likely that the Reds' scouts are looking at Brunner as a Wirtz replacement.
And with six goals in seven games this season, Brunner based on these recent reports also feels like the perfect candidate to take over from Wirtz.
Right now, given Liverpool's clear infatuation with the player and Wirtz's own poor form, it looks like Brunner might just be coming to take his compatriot's spot at Anfield.
