Among those still working their way back is ace Garrett Crochet, who has spent the bulk of the season on the shelf with a shoulder injury. While Crochet won't function as a starter if he returns, the Red Sox have long held out hope that he can at least serve as a relief weapon in October.

Garrett Crochet update
Crochet will throw another live batting practice session during the final weekend of the regular season, Tracy told reporters Wednesday.
The left-hander threw live batting practice for the first time on Tuesday, a major hurdle in his comeback effort. While the Red Sox didn't immediately give an update on Crochet after the session, he was seen playing catch at Fenway Park on Wednesday, indicating he got through it without any setbacks.
Tracy's announcement confirmed Crochet is still working toward a return, but there are still questions about the timeline and whether Boston is ready to give him a coveted roster spot in the postseason.

When will Garrett Crochet return?
Crochet won't pitch in the regular season, Tracy confirmed Wednesday, but the newly-minted manager said the postseason remains an option. Whether Crochet would be ready to pitch in the wild-card series, which starts Tuesday, is unclear.
Crochet said Tuesday that he will leave the decision to the Red Sox but said he believes he is capable of getting outs.
"For me to take a spot on the roster, then someone would have to lose one, and I would feel bad doing that because this team's pitched their a— off the whole season," Crochet told reporters.
If Crochet returns, he won't be used as a starter. The Red Sox simply didn't have enough time to build him up to the point that he can give the team length, but Tracy has said in recent weeks that Crochet could function as an opener at the start of games if necessary.
