Review: ‘Hunkkaar’ comes off as heavy-handed while trying to be hard-hitting

A 17-year-old girl walks into a police station with her parents and accuses an elderly man of rape. Although Meenu (Aneet Padda) was semi-conscious during the assault, she can identify the perpetrator. Since he is the widely respected and influential guru known as Baapji, almost nobody believes Meenu.

While her mother Vaishali (Charu Shankar) is firmly on her side, her father Dharampal (Rajesh Sharma) is less convinced. Like so many others, Dharampal cannot accept that the wisdom-spouting religious leader behind numerous acts of charity – Meenu is studying in a school funded by Baapji – is a predator who targets underage girls.
Despite the odds, Meenu has a few more supporters in her corner, including doughty police officer Jasleen (Fatima Sana Shaikh), principled television journalist Amitabh (Arjun Mathur) and do-gooder lawyer Babbanrao (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub). Baapji (Raghubir Yadav), whose real name is Sunil Chakosi, has his son Kashyap (Veen), his factotum Shivani (Zoya Husasin) and the advocate Govind (Ram Kapoor) in his team.
The battle royale plays out in an actual courtroom and the court of public opinion. Chakosi is as venerated as he is feared. He will do whatever it takes to destroy Meenu’s reputation and clear his name.
