ABC runs into audio issues after addressing Trump-related communication concerns

Despite rampant speculation, President Donald Trump did not appear on ESPN’s College GameDay, but he did attend the college football game between the No. 1 Texas Longhorns the No. 14 Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville on Saturday afternoon.

ABC aired Neyland Stadium’s introduction of Trump after a commercial break in the first quarter:

“As you’d expect, Secret Service with heightened security today,” Chris Fowler said on the ABC broadcast. “Fans got here very early. Sometimes, when the President moves during a game, it can affect the communication [in] the coaches’ headsets and the communication with players on the field.”

A few minutes later, during an injury timeout, Fowler threw it down to Laura Rutledge on the sideline for a report on how Trump’s movements could impact communications in the game.

“I have confirmation from both teams, Texas and Tennessee, that they’ve worked with the Secret Service to make sure that their radio frequencies are cleared with the Secret Service,” Rutledge said. “They think that the comms should be perfectly okay coach-to-coach. The one concern they have is coach-to-player, but they have worked on all kinds of signaling if that does go down, communication-wise.”

Rutledge relayed that sources close to the Service Service “weren’t willing to make an official stance,” but “they did tell [her], at major events like this, there’s also going to be electromagnetic deconfliction.”

Immediately after Rutledge threw it back to Fowler, the ABC broadcast began experiencing audio issues. Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit bantered about Trump’s attendance impacting headset communications during the College Football National Championship in January. We could barely hear their thoughts on the matter, however, due to abrasive static.

“I apologize for the audio problems,” Fowler said. “I don’t know if you’re hearing at home what we’re hearing, but it’s incredibly staticky, and if so, we’ll try to get that fixed as soon as possible.”

The audio issues came and went throughout the first and second quarter, but audio quality was restored by halftime.

It’s unclear whether Trump’s presence caused ABC’s audio glitch or ABC experienced the craziest coincidence of all time. Either way, the sequence was ripe for comedy. See some of the best reactions below.
