Washington is poised to sign running back Austin Ekeler, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Monday morning. The pact, the report states, is pending a physical.
Ekeler suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during a Week 2 loss to Green Bay, a non-contact injury that ended his season. He worked out for the Carolina Panthers last week, per the NFL transaction wire.

The signing could be considered unexpected considering the Washington running back room, but NBC4's JP Finlay offered some context to it.

A more official word from the Commanders on Ekeler and White could come later Monday afternoon, when head coach Dan Quinn will hold a press conference.
Ekeler spent most of his career as a do-everything running back for the L.A. Chargers, but signed with Washington before the 2024 season. He was productive that year, with 733 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.
If signed, he could step in for an injured player and provide some coverage as a third-down back.
