Canadian man arrested after $8.5M cocaine bust at U.S. border in New York

A 21-year-old Canadian man was arrested last week in New York after U.S. border agents stationed at the Lewiston Bridge near Buffalo seized more than $8 million worth of cocaine hidden inside a transport truck.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Tuesday that officers at the border crossing encountered the truck driver heading to Canada on Sept. 22.
Border officials alleged that, following an initial physical inspection, the trailer’s floor had been modified. A police canine searched the empty trailer and alerted officers to the presence of narcotics. The truck and trailer were then escorted to a secondary inspection area.
During the secondary inspection, border police said a non-intrusive inspection of the trailer’s floor revealed what they described as anomalies. A search of the floor led officers to locate 174 vacuum-sealed packages of suspected cocaine, which police said tested positive for the drug.
Approximately 200 kilos seized
Border officials said approximately 200 kg of cocaine was seized, with an estimated street value of about $6 million US, or $8.5 million Cdn.
The investigation was referred to Homeland Security Investigations Buffalo for further review, officials said.

“This significant seizure highlights the exceptional vigilance, advanced training and relentless dedication of our CBP officers and canine teams at the Lewiston Bridge border crossing,” Sharon Swiatek, acting port director for the Area Port of Buffalo, said in a statement.
“While a large focus of our border security mission is on inbound threats, our officers remain equally sharp during outbound operations to dismantle transborder criminal networks, disrupt the flow of dangerous narcotics and protect communities on both sides of the border.”
No further details about the investigation, including the identity of the accused or what charges he is facing, were released by border officials.
