Packers Place 2X National Champion on Injured Reserve as Defensive Line Takes Another Hit

· Yahoo Sports

The Green Bay Packers entered 2026 expecting their defensive line to look different after several major changes from last season. They added veteran Javon Hargrave, welcomed back Devonte Wyatt and gave several younger linemen opportunities to earn bigger roles.

Warren Brinson was among the young players expected to benefit from those changes. The 2025 sixth-round pick had been building momentum before injuries interrupted the start of what was supposed to be an important second NFL season.

Instead of making his 2026 debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brinson is headed to injured reserve after suffering another setback.

Packers Lose a Promising Young Defensive Lineman

Green Bay placed Brinson on injured reserve Saturday after he suffered a groin injury during Wednesday’s practice. The injury came only days after he returned from a calf issue that had kept him out of the first three games.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Brinson injured his groin when he slipped during practice. He is now expected to miss a significant amount of time after appearing close to making his season debut.

ESPN’s senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter tweeted hours ago, “Packers have placed DT Warren Brinson on injured reserve.”

The timing creates another setback for a young defensive tackle who had started earning a larger role. Brinson appeared in 11 games with one start as a rookie, recording 13 tackles, three quarterback hits, half a sack and 13 Next Gen Stats quarterback pressures across 243 defensive snaps.

His 9.3% pressure rate ranked 10th among rookie defensive linemen. Those numbers showed why Green Bay expected Brinson to provide more interior pressure and reliable rotational snaps during his second season.

Brinson initially spent several games inactive as a rookie before working his way into the rotation. He finished the season with a start and a playoff appearance, putting him in position to compete for more opportunities in 2026.

Packers Face Other Defensive Line Concerns

Brinson’s absence would be easier to absorb if the rest of Green Bay’s defensive line were healthy. The Packers will instead enter Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay without two defensive tackles.

Anthony Campbell has been ruled out with an ankle injury. Karl Brooks dealt with an illness during the week but did not receive a game designation, while Hargrave, Wyatt, Chris McClellan and Jonathan Ford remain available.

Green Bay Packers’ Isaiah McDuffie (58) and Warren Brinson (91) sack Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (9) in the second quarter during their football game Sunday, November 23, 2025, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The Packers also entered the season without Micah Parsons, who has been recovering from knee surgery. Green Bay has already spent much of the opening month adjusting its defensive front before losing another rotational player.

Those concerns became more significant after the Atlanta Falcons ran for 242 yards and three touchdowns in Green Bay’s 35-14 Week 3 loss. The Packers had allowed only 2.85 yards per carry through their first two games before struggling to contain Atlanta’s rushing attack.

Tampa Bay running back Bucky Irving practiced fully on Friday and remains available for Sunday’s game. Irving has recorded 180 rushing yards through three games, giving Green Bay’s depleted defensive front another immediate test.

Warren Brinson’s Injury Changes Rotation

The Packers prepared for potential injuries by carrying seven defensive tackles on their active roster. That depth leaves Brooks, Wyatt, Hargrave, McClellan and Ford available for the matchup against Tampa Bay.

Green Bay has enough players to replace Brinson’s snaps, but his absence removes a young defender expected to take another step after earning more opportunities as a rookie. His latest injury delays that development and forces the Packers to adjust their rotation again during an already difficult start for the defensive front.
