Rohini Rana, affectionately known as Dolly, is a writer, culinary historian, and entrepreneur who is especially interested in preserving the rich culinary traditions of South Asia. She was born into the royal family of Awagarh in Uttar Pradesh and married into Nepal’s Rana family. Her travel, restaurant and social work, and her husband’s job in the army have deeply informed her writing.

Her books, The Rana Cookbook: Recipes from the Palaces of Nepal and The Nepal Cookbook: 108 Regional Recipes, documented royal and regional Nepali foodways with rare care and depth. Her latest book, Memories on a Platter: My Fusion Cookbook, brings together Indian, Nepali and global influences gathered through a life of movement, memory and hospitality, offering recipes that honour heritage while speaking to the modern palate.

Rana’s journey is a reminder that movement can also be a form of becoming. The book and author show us how food, memory and feminine resilience can exist gracefully on a platter. Her journey reminded me that a peripatetic life, one lived across postings, homes, cultures, kitchens and worlds, seasons a woman and makes her observant.

In this conversation with Scroll, she invites the reader for an intimate sit down multiple course affair.
