Madhya Pradesh: Did not anticipate Ladli Behna scheme’s ‘financial burden’, says CM

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has said that he had not anticipated the “financial burden” that his government’s cash transfer scheme for women, the Ladli Behna Yojana, would cause the state, reported NDTV on Monday.

“The Ladli Behna scheme turned out to be a very costly affair,” the Bharatiya Janata Party leader said at an event in Bhopal.

His party had announced the scheme six months ahead of the Assembly elections in 2023. Launched by former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the scheme entailed monthly transfer of Rs 1,000 to women between 21 and 60 years of age, whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh.

In October 2023, the monthly amount was increased to Rs 1,250, a month before the Assembly polls. The BJP had also promised, in its poll manifesto, to increase the amount to Rs 3,000 per month.

The scheme is said to have contributed to the BJP’s victory in the Assembly elections.

Since then, it has seen one hike, with Yadav increasing the monthly payments to Rs 1,500 in November. The budgetary allocation for the scheme for financial year 2026-’27 was Rs 23,882 crore, reported The Hindu.

On September 16, the Madhya Pradesh High Court sought responses from the state authorities on a petition seeking to close the cash transfer scheme.
