All Juice, No Beer: Kyle Juszczyk Wins Appeal Against ‘Hypocritical’ NFL Fine

The NFL has officially reversed course on its controversial discipline against San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl fullback Kyle Juszczyk, rescinding a $14,926 fine that was originally levied for what the league mistook as an imitation of chugging a beer.

Misinterpretation Cleared Up
The initial fine stemmed from San Francisco’s Week 2 victory over the Miami Dolphins, when league officials cited Juszczyk under Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 for "engaging in offensive demonstrations." The NFL claimed Juszczyk mimicked chugging a beer on two separate occasions.
However, the league formally withdrew the penalty following a successful appeal.
"His celebration was simulating drinking a juice box, not a beer," the NFL acknowledged in a statement following the appeal. "...Mr. Juszczyk finally stated that the fine is hypocritical with the amount of Bud Light sponsorships surrounding the NFL."
When head coach Kyle Shanahan first informed Juszczyk of the fine last month, the veteran fullback admitted he thought his coach was joking.
Inside the Appeal Process
Juszczyk, who has been affectionately nicknamed "Juice" by teammates and fans, has performed his signature celebration for years following major plays, directly playing off the chants that echo around Levi's Stadium whenever he catches the ball.
During his press availability following his appeal hearing, Juszczyk pulled out all the stops to make his case to the media and the league's officers. He placed a large jug labeled "Not Beer" at his locker and displayed one of his custom thigh pads featuring an explicit juice box graphic.
"It's what I imagine a court hearing would be like," Juszczyk said of the process. "They read your fine and give you the letter of the law. They let you speak and basically, you explain what happened on the play, what your responsibility was, what you were thinking. And then your agent gets a chance to say what he or she wants to say. The NFLPA gets a chance to chime in and say what they need to say and that's it."
Juszczyk also addressed the inherent irony behind the league's original ruling:
"Even if it was beer, I don't think that should be a problem with all the beer endorsements that we have in the NFL," Juszczyk pointed out. "We have everything. So even if it was beer, which it wasn't, I still felt like it wasn't an infraction."
Turning Fines Into Opportunity
The viral media storm surrounding the original fine ended up turning into a major marketing victory for the 49ers fullback. Multiple beverage brands reached out with endorsement opportunities following the incident.
Among them, Ocean Spray inked a partnership with Juszczyk, launching a promotion to give away 14,926 bottles of juice to fans…ironically matching the exact dollar amount of the rescinded fine.
With his wallet intact and his signature celebration officially cleared by the league office, Juszczyk turns his focus back to rehab after suffering a knee hyperextension in Week 4.
