Grant applications processed in one day have a higher chance of being declined

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) hasn’t revealed much about its vetting process.

Grant applicants know the agency wants to analyse finances to determine whether they qualify.

But if your grant application takes one day to process, your chances of being declined are higher.

The Science Behind Grant Approvals

SASSA released its half-year report.

The report shows how many grants SASSA had approved and how long it took.

The agency wants to improve its service delivery, keeping most applications to under 7 days.

Currently, 78.3% of the new applications were processed within 7 days.

However, more applications are declined within one day than within 90 days.

On average, SASSA declines 11.43% of applications.

But on the first day, it declines 12.07% of applications.

Grants processed in one day have a higher-than-average decline rate.

The 90-day waiting period has the fewest declines. Only 5.17% of these applications are declined.

There are also grants that are more likely to be declined than others.

The most commonly declined grant is the disability grant. SASSA declines 27.9% of disability grant applications.

The most approved grant is the Child Support Grant. SASSA only declines 1.27% of Child Support Grant applications.

Why Does SASSA Decline More Grants With a 1 Day Processing Time?

After you’ve submitted your application, SASSA conducts its means test.

The means test determines whether you qualify for the grant you want.

Much of this process relies on digital systems, which is why SASSA processes 61% of the applications it receives in one day.

During the vetting, SASSA’s systems analyse the supporting documents.

For the Older Person’s Grant, the agency assesses income and assets.

For the Child Support Grant, SASSA only assesses income.

The Foster Care Grant is the only grant where applicants don’t undergo means testing.

However, these applicants must have a court order placing the child in their care.

Disability grants are typically denied more frequently because, beyond providing financial documents, applicants must book and pass a medical assessment.

Between April and June, the agency processed 396 257 applications and approved 350 976.

It approved 88.57% of applications.

  • Child Support Grant Approval Rate: 98.73%
  • Old Age Grant Approval Rate: 97.88%
  • Disability Grant Approval Rate: 72.06%
