They were 0-2 heading into their most recent game, needing to win to ensure they remained in with a chance of winning the five-game series.

However, when all was said and done, the Rays won 4-3 on Wednesday, sending the Yankees out of the postseason.
Dave Portnoy has now taken to X/Twitter to send a mocking message, making reference to their previous champagne celebrations against the Boston Red Sox.

Prior to taking on the Rays, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 2-0 andcelebratedwith champagne after their 9-2 win in the second game of the wild-card series.
Now, Portnoy has taken to X/Twitter to write: “Start spreading the news!!! Congrats to your 2026 Wildcard Champagne Champions, the New York Yankees,” followed by a number of ‘broom’ and ‘face with tears of joy’ emojis.
Ben Rice has since spoken out about their exit, saying: “As far as I’m concerned, it’s a failure since we weren’t able to get the job done.
“It’s on to next year, unfortunately. They outplayed us, plain and simple. They outpitched us, out-hit us. It’s really that simple.”
Meanwhile, the Rays will now be watching the Chicago White Sox and the Cleveland Guardians closely to find out who they will play next in the postseason.
