South Carolina vs Florida Prediction: Can the Gators Handle the Adversity?

· Yahoo Sports

Just when it seemed like Florida was an unstoppable machine after a 52-28 win over Ole Miss, it rolled on into Columbia, Missouri, and was … stopped. Cold.

The Gators lost 45-17 in a bit of a reality slap for the program after a wonderful first month of the Jon Sumrall era. Beat South Carolina, go 5-1 over the last six games after this, and all will be fine. But there’s work to do.

There are must-win games, and there’s South Carolina coming to Gainesville this weekend.

The Gamecocks dropped the home game against Mississippi State 41-34 and lost at Alabama 49-18. That wasn’t great, but all was supposed to be right against Kentucky last week, and instead it was a 35-34 loss that ended any hope of being in the SEC and College Football Playoff races.

Why South Carolina Will Win

South Carolina doesn’t want a track meet. It’ll be more than happy to make this a low scoring game with all the pressure on the home side to produce. That’s where the weather comes in.

It’s not supposed to be as bad in Gainesville as it’s expected to be in Tuscaloosa for the Alabama showdown against Georgia, but the forecast is for a whole lot of rain, potentially turning the place into a literal swamp.

For all of South Carolina’s problems, the run defense has been solid. It’s allowing just 3.2 yards per carry, no one has blasted away on the front – including Alabama – and on the flip side, the Gamecocks have the SEC’s best running game.

Why Florida Will Win

South Carolina can run, and it can stop the run, so what’s the problem?

Two turnovers in each of the last four games, and a -7 turnover margin over the stretch. The Gamecocks have themselves a massive fumbling problem.

Florida came up with eight takeaways in the first four games, and last week against Missouri was the first time it didn’t generate a takeaway.

South Carolina vs Florida Prediction, Betting Lines

Be careful with this one if the weather does what it’s expected to do. South Carolina is a funky-tough matchup for what Florida does.

The Gators don’t have much of a pass defense – they were ripped up by Trinidad Chambliss in the win over Ole Miss and Austin Simmons in the loss to Mizzou – and LaNorris Sellers is just good enough to connect on the midrange passes to go along with the Gamecock ground game.

South Carolina will get off to a great start, and then the turnovers will come. Florida will pull away late, but it’ll be a nervy game in the rain.
