Northland Christian (2-3) enters Friday night’s matchup on a two-game winning streak of its own. Last Friday the Trailblazers took down Rich Hill with Hume 44-20 at home. Last season, LeBlond defeated Northland Christian 56-22, but coach Chuck Davis expects the visitors to bring its best effort.
“They run the ball and throw the ball about like us, close to 50-50, and it keeps you honest on defense” Davis said. “They run a ton of different formations and they do a couple nice things out of each one. So we’re going to have to be really good at following our rules and doing our job on both sides of the ball if we want to be successful.”
In each of LeBlond’s three wins this season it has scored 40 points or more. In the loss to Kansas City East Christian the Golden Eagles fell short of that tally with 34 points. For Davis, LeBlond will lean heavily on its depth heading into the matchup with Northland Christian.
“We had a couple of kids sustain injuries last week in the game, so we’ve had to have guys step up in their place,” Davis said. “Luckily for us we have done a pretty good job thus for of not having a huge separation between varsity type kids and JV type kids. And player development from all the coaches on the staff is really at the forefront of our focus all the time.”
The Trailblazers are just the second opponent with a losing record the Golden Eagles have taken on this season. With LeBlond hitting the road for its final two contests of the season, the matchup with Northland Christian gives the Golden Eagles a chance to climb over .500 before rounding out the regular season away from home.
Davis hopes that senior leadership can help guide LeBlond down the stretch and into he postseason.
“Hawk Ideker and Landyn Woolery our two defensive ends. Landyn plays offensive guard and Hawk’s our tight end,” Davis said. “They’re two, two-way starters who do a little bit of everything for us. They’ve been phenomenal, I think they’re guys that we will go deep into the playoffs if they’re at their best.”
Bishop LeBlond takes on Northland Christian at 7 p.m. Friday in St. Joseph.
