‘This is worse than Emergency’: Opposition on protesters, journalists being detained during protest

Opposition leaders on Saturday condemned the detention of hundreds of protesters, journalists and activists in Delhi during demonstrations demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, saying “this is worse than the Emergency”.

“We are living under an absolute dictatorship ruled by Modi,” Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal said, adding that the detention of protesters, including Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke from an aircraft, reflected the government’s “unprecedented level of fear”.

Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of protecting electoral fraud by “crushing democracy”.

He demanded that Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must step down.

The Delhi Police detained hundreds of protesters across the capital, including Dipke, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, several activists and journalists including Scroll’s Ayush Tiwari and Shoaib Daniyal.

The protest was organised by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign and student groups affiliated with Left parties to demand Kumar’s resignation over concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. They were demanding a rollback of the voter roll revision.
