In their last match before the international break, Man City signed off with a 5-3 win over Sunderland at the Etihad. The result preserved City’s perfect record through the opening five fixtures and took them to 15 points. Arsenal have since drawn level after beating Leeds 2-1 on Saturday, though City remain ahead on goal difference.
Liverpool’s unbeaten opening has been less convincing. They have won only two games and drawn the other three. Their 1-0 victory over Bournemouth before the break left them on nine points.
Manchester City beat the Reds in all three meetings between the sides last season. However, those results carry less weight this time around as both clubs are now under different managers.
Andoni Iraola arrived at Anfield this summer after guiding Bournemouth to sixth last season. Under the Spaniard, Liverpool have yet to lose in the top flight. Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of 2025/26 brought the curtain down on his decade-long spell at the Etihad. Yet the Citizens have made a flawless league start under Enzo Maresca, who previously worked as Guardiola’s assistant during the club’s Treble-winning 2022/23 campaign.
Sunday’s clash will be missing Liverpool’s leading scorer. Alexander Isak has been ruled out with a minor thigh injury sustained on international duty. The Swedish forward’s four goals leave him only one behind Erling Haaland’s five. The hosts will also be without Cody Gakpo after the winger picked up an ankle injury while away with the Netherlands. He has three assists in the Premier League, level with City’s Antoine Semenyo. Those absences could hand Bradley Barcola a greater role in attack, as Iraola noted the Frenchman’s versatility ahead of the game. Meanwhile, Jeremy Jacquet is expected to be fit to play.
Man City’s team news is more positive, as Erling Haaland will be available for the fixture. Phil Foden will miss the match through suspension.
City have outscored Liverpool 13 to seven so far this term, but the hosts hold the edge at the other end, with Alisson keeping three clean sheets to Donnarumma’s two. Maresca’s side head into the game in stronger form, looking to move clear of defending champions Arsenal and keep their winning run going. The Reds, meanwhile, will aim to preserve their unbeaten record and close the gap with a victory. They could become the first Premier League team to take points off the visitors this season.
The match kicks off at Anfield on Sunday 11 October at 16:30 BST and will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event.
