Top seed Alexander Zverev was taken to a third set by French journeyman Quentin Halys in the Shanghai Masters last 32 but eventually prevailed 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3 on Sunday.

Zverev can reach the year-end number one spot in the men's world rankings in Shanghai if he reaches the semi-finals. He is currently world number two behind Jannik Sinner, who ended his season early due to knee issues.

The German, 29, won his maiden Grand Slam titles this year at the French and US Opens and is looking to finish off the season on a high.

He increased his record over Halys to 4-0 with his 60th win of the year. Zverev will face Alexander Bublik in the next round after the Kazakhstani beat Brandon Nakashima in three sets.

Zverev said: "I feel like this year I've been picking my places where I want to peak, and I feel like I did that quite well. So I'm happy with that, but I think that 60 wins doesn't tell the whole story."

France's Arthur Gea shocked US third seed Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) and Alex De Minaur, in his first match since pulling out of the Beijing final against Novak Djokovic last week, beat Rei Sakamoto 7-6 (7-6), 6-4.

There were also wins for Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Jakub Mensik, Karen Khachanov and Hubert Hurkacz.

The rest of the last 32, including Carlos Alcaraz against Zizou Bergs, takes place on Monday.
