Drake Maye had plenty of time to throw against the Las Vegas Raiders. He praised his offensive line for keeping him comfortable.

Maye highlighted the strong protection he received in Sunday’s 45-17 win over the Raiders at home. He joked that he could have been eating a ham sandwich in the pocket while waiting for a receiver. He made these comments after throwing a touchdown to DeMario “Pop” Douglas.

“The first touchdown to Pop, I’m back there, credit to the offensive line, eating a ham sandwich. I got all day back there,” Maye said, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss on X.

Reiss also shared Maye’s main point about the offensive line, quoting him: “Credit to the offensive line. One play could be back there eating a ham sandwich.”

Maye’s joke showed the importance of New England’s protection for the passing game. When a quarterback has time to look for open receivers, the offense is more likely to find chances downfield. They are also more likely to score in the red zone.

For Maye, good protection also helped him connect with his receivers and throw the ball without defenders closing in right away.

The offensive line plays a big role in helping the young quarterback grow. When Maye has time to make decisions, the Patriots can be more consistent in the passing game. This also lets their playmakers shine.

Maye’s sandwich comment was a fun way to highlight the offensive line’s hard work. Touchdowns and stats usually get the spotlight. But Maye made sure his blockers got credit for giving him the time and space to make plays.

If New England keeps protecting Drake Maye like this, the Patriots’ offense will have a solid foundation to build on.
