Frankfurt's last triumph had been a 3-1 against Mainz on September 12. They were then held to a 2-2 draw with Freiburg and, after the three-week international break, resumed their season with a 6-0 defeat to RB Leipzig.

They added three more points to their tally, but had to fight hard for the winner, which came only in the 77th minute.

Ebnoutalib played a one-two with Noëll Aséko, who threaded through a pass to give him back the ball, and finished off from close range to beat the goalkeeper.

Ahead of the weekend matches, Frankfurt moved up to eighth, while Cologne dropped to 11th.

Champions Bayern Munich host RB Leipzig on Saturday, while Borussia Dortmund visit Union Berlin. Leaders Freiburg have a match at Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

Freiburg top the standings with 13 points, tied with Dortmund but ahead on goal difference, and two points ahead of Bayern.
