Week 6 wrapped up with a Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders that saw Brock Purdy make NFL history early on. Coach Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers opened up a 20-3 halftime lead at Levi’s Stadium on a day when general manager John Lynch raved about Purdy’s time in a red and gold uniform so far and the Monday Night Football crew spoke about analytics vs. gut feel.
Announcer Joe Buck made a reference to Shanahan’s longtime reliance on his gut as head coach, which prompted a wild anti-analytics take from his partner in the broadcast booth, Troy Aikman.
“There’s a lot of gut feel (among coaches) in this league, and there’s a lot of gut feel that he uses in spots like this,” Buck said ahead of a fourth-down play that Shanahan decided to roll the dice on.

“Yeah, I agree, and I think analytics is a good way to lose your job as a head coach,” Aikman added. “And I think he’s gotta be smart about it, Kyle certainly is…The analytics, by the way, does say go for it, but as you mentioned, it’s not something that Kyle Shanahan pays much attention to, it’s more junk than anything else.”
The play happened on fourth-and-three from the Commanders’ 11-yard-line in a 7-3 game with 5:42 remaining in the first quarter.
The 49ers took a 20-3 halftime lead to the locker room, showing once again that Shanahan’s “gut feel” based approach was working well as his team looked to move to 6-0 on the 2026 NFL season. The 49ers’ Eddy Pineiro-led kicking game made a big mistake, but San Francisco continued to play lights-out football as Buck and Aikman looked on.
