RFEF confirms four-match suspension for Real Betis midfielder after clash with Lamine Yamal

Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension following his confrontation with Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal, with the RFEF Disciplinary Committee ruling that the incident constituted an assault under Spanish football’s disciplinary regulations.

As reported by Mundo Deportivo, the punishment follows Bernal’s red card during Betis’ meeting with Barcelona last Saturday.

The midfielder was dismissed after an altercation with Yamal, who intervened when tensions escalated around teammate Fermin Lopez.

RFEF explains why Bernal received a four-match suspension

The disciplinary committee based its decision on the referee’s account of the incident and Article 103 of the Disciplinary Code, which covers assaults committed without causing injury.

Ricardo de Burgos Bengoechea’s report described the sequence that led to Bernal’s dismissal in the 54th minute, making clear that the confrontation involved physical contact while the ball was out of play.

“In the 54th minute, player (6) FACUNDO BERNAL CRUZ was sent off for the following reason: during a confrontation, this player grabbed an opponent by the neck and headbutted him twice in quick succession in the face, whilst the ball was not in play.

“The opposing player did not require medical attention and was able to continue the match,” the referee’s report stated

Notably, Article 103 provides for a suspension of four to twelve matches when a player assaults another person without causing injury, with the fact that play has stopped serving as a determining factor in establishing intent.

Bernal has received the minimum four-match punishment under that provision.

How the confrontation with Lamine Yamal unfolded

The incident began shortly after half-time, when Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles attempted to help Fermin Lopez up while the Barcelona midfielder was on the ground.

The Betis midfielder first grabbed Yamal before the exchange escalated into a clash of heads. The referee subsequently showed Bernal a straight red card, leaving Betis to continue without him.

The disciplinary ruling therefore addresses not simply a heated exchange between opponents, but an incident that the referee explicitly described as involving two headbutts while the ball was out of play.

Barcelona extended their lead after the red card

Bernal was dismissed with Barcelona leading 3-2, but the match moved further in the visitors’ favour after the sending-off.

Barça eventually secured a 5-2 victory, turning a closely contested encounter into a more convincing result.

Eric Garcia, who was injured in the same game, scored a mere eight minutes after the incident, while Dani Olmo, who picked up an injury against PSG last night, extended the lead to 5-2.
