The Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors had quite the season opener, to say the least. Even with the Lakers dismantling the Warriors, there was no shortage of fireworks between the two teams.
Perhaps the most surprising part was that Golden State rookie Yaxel Lendeborg was going back and forth with Luka Doncic. Lendeborg was given a technical foul, which was followed by Doncic draining a half-court shot right in front of him just before halftime. After the game, the rookie admitted that he had lost all respect for the Lakers star.
“I had a lot of respect for him ... but being in there first hand, watching all the whining and complaining, I lost all respect for him,” Lendeborg told the media.
The exchange between the two players was one of the more entertaining storylines to come out of the game, as both went all in for their respective teams. Lendeborg getting a technical in his first career game was certainly unexpected. Doncic made it clear after the game that the rookie was talking too much and that he knew the shot was going in.
“He was talking crazy ... I knew that was going before I got it in my hands. I work on those,” Doncic said.
While speaking with the media, Lendeborg provided insight into how he ended up getting called for the technical foul.
“I was telling him he sucks. He can’t score on me. You talking, you can’t score on me. I said it the whole game. I said a couple cuss words obviously, you know, that’s why I got the technical and all that. But I was letting him know because he was laughing and talking all this because of that one foul call, and his only bucket was a banker from half court. Like, I know that it’s a team sport. He had 28 on us as a team. Me, I took my matchup personally,” Lendeborg said.
There is no doubt that there is no love lost between these two, and a new rivalry could have formed on just the second day of the season. Lendeborg is a rookie who doesn't appear to fear anyone, so it will be interesting to see how things unfold when the two meet again.
As a rookie, Lendeborg has to understand that veterans are going to talk trash, and he needs to do his best to stay level-headed. Getting a technical foul in his first career game is not an ideal way to start his NBA career, regardless of the circumstances.
