The police in Imphal on Friday fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators who were protesting against recent killings in Manipur, PTI reported.
The demonstrations were held in five Meitei-dominated valley districts against the ethnic violence and the government’s alleged failure to restore normalcy in the state.
No injuries were reported during the “sound protest” called by the Federation of Haomee, a civil society group. In several parts of Imphal, protesters banged utensils and struck electric poles with hammers, and motorists honked their vehicle horns as part of the demonstrations, India Today NE reported.
In Imphal, the protesters marched to the Kangla fort near the governor’s residence and the chief minister’s secretariat, PTI reported. Kangla is the historic political and cultural centre of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom.
While security personnel stopped several protesters at Palace Compound, Moirangkhom and Keisampat junctions, hundreds managed to reach the Kangla gate, the news agency reported. They were prevented from entering the fort premises.
