Kevin Cash and the Tampa Bay Rays decided to save ace Drew Rasmussen for Game 2 of the World Series, but that move did not pan out. Rasmussen lasted just 3.2 innings, his shortest start in over three months, as the Brewers came all the way back from four runs down to take Game 2, 5-4, to take a 2-0 series lead.

Cash discussed Rasmussen’s disappointing performance post-game, and the Rays manager admitted it just wasn’t Drew’s night.

“Just wasn’t as sharp, wasn’t as crisp. Milwaukee they put together a bunch of good at bats,” Cash said per Rays reporter Ryan Bass.

Drew Rasmussen had a four-run lead to work with as the Rays jumped early on Brewers starter Logan Henderson. However, Rasmussen was unable to keep that lead intact as he quickly gave up two runs in the bottom of the first. Rasmussen struggled to recover from that rough start as he was eventually yanked before the end of the 4th inning with the Rays still leading 4-3.

Rasmussen’s final line was three earned runs on six hits in 3.2 innings, with four strikeouts and two walks. That was a far cry from what he showed in his first three starts of the postseason, where he had a sparkling 1.29 ERA. That includes two absolute gems against the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians.

With the Rays down 2-0 heading back to Tampa, the Rays will be hoping reigning ALCS MVP Freddy Peralta can finally provide a strong start in Game 3. Peralta has a 1.08 ERA in four appearances this postseason, with two earned runs in 16 innings of work in three starts.
