Colts guard Quenton Nelson played through it as the anchor of the offensive line he has led for years. Days later, a surprising move involving the veteran guard has changed the direction of the franchise.
Colts trade Quenton Nelson to Seahawks for draft capital
The Colts have agreed to trade Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Indianapolis will receive a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick in return. Seattle landed the eight-time Pro Bowler in a blockbuster deal on Tuesday.
Nelson is 30 years old and has reached the Pro Bowl in every season of his career. The Colts drafted him sixth overall out of Notre Dame in 2018, and he earned first-team All-Pro honors three times from 2018 to 2020. His contract expires after this season, and the sides did not reach an extension before it began.
Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson (56) and Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore (95) celebrate Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, after a game against the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. That timing shaped the decision. Adam Schefter explained, “Nelson is on an expiring contract and the Colts are opting to get back draft capital now before they could lose him in free agency.” Waiting would have brought only a compensatory pick in 2028.
Seattle is poised to have five compensatory picks in 2027 from the free-agent losses of Boye Mafe, Kenneth Walker, Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant.
They’ll also receive a third-round pick after executive Nolan Teasley became Minnesota’s GM.
That flexibility has allowed Seattle to be aggressive in the trade market, and now they land Quenton Nelson.

The trade follows the firing of general manager Chris Ballard on Oct. 19. Indianapolis is selling veterans before the Nov. 10 deadline, and DeForest Buckner, who recently voiced blunt frustration, was moved in a separate deal on Tuesday. Seattle’s side of the story shows why this deal came together so quickly.
Seahawks use extra picks to chase another title
Seattle sits at 4-3 as the defending Super Bowl champion, fresh off a 20-3 win over the Chiefs on Sunday night. Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker later broke silence on a controversial handshake snub after that game.
The front office also has room to act. Schefter reported that Seattle is poised to collect five compensatory picks in 2027 for losing Boye Mafe, Walker, Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant. The team will also get a third-round pick after Nolan Teasley became Minnesota’s general manager. That flexibility let Seattle be aggressive on the trade market.
Nelson should help an offensive line that has let Seattle quarterbacks be sacked or hit on 18.2% of dropbacks, the fifth-highest rate in the league. Seattle waived guard Christian Haynes to open a roster spot.
Seattle (4-3) hosts the Bears on Monday Night Football on Nov. 2 with Nelson now on the roster. Indianapolis (2-5) visits the Jaguars in Week 8 with a thinner offensive line and more deals possible before the deadline.
