Indications of a neck-and-neck race have emerged in Israel’s parliamentary election. According to exit polls, neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing bloc nor the opposition bloc is securing the necessary majority to form a government. Consequently, uncertainty looms over Netanyahu’s political future.

In the revised surveys published after the polls closed on Tuesday (October 27), it was revealed that Netanyahu’s bloc and the opposition alliance led by former army chief Gadi Eisenkot could each secure approximately 51 seats. However, at least 61 seats are required to form a government in the 120-member Knesset.

According to the surveys, Netanyahu’s Likud party could emerge as the single largest party with approximately 27 seats. Meanwhile, the Arab-led parties could collectively secure around 18 seats. As a result, their role in forming a government could become crucial.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Eisenkot has claimed that the public has voted for change in the election. On the other hand, Netanyahu’s Likud party stated that exit polls are not the final word, and the situation could change with the final results.

Voter turnout in this election was 77.7 percent, the highest since 1999. The Gaza war, national security, and questions of political leadership significantly influenced this vote.

According to Al Jazeera, preliminary results are expected on Wednesday (October 28), with official results to be released on November 4. However, if no coalition secures a majority, prolonged negotiations over government formation could ensue.

Consequently, attention is now focused on the final results and potential coalition equations to determine who will be Israel’s next Prime Minister.
