PFF stat shows why Jets need to get Garrett Wilson involved

The New York Jets don't need another reminder of how much wide receiver Garrett Wilson wants to help them win. The star has made that clear, particularly after back-to-back losses in which his involvement became a source of frustration.

The more pressing question is whether the offense can find better ways to capitalize on what he does best. Pro Football Focus recently offered a compelling reason to make that a priority.
Wilson owns the NFL's highest catch rate against man coverage among wide receivers with at least ten targets in those situations:

The numbers don't mean every throw should go his way, but they show how effective Wilson has been when given opportunities against individual coverage. Wilson recently acknowledged his frustration with his limited involvement, while emphasizing that his motivation comes from wanting the Jets to succeed.
"No doubt... I'd be lying if I said it's not (his answer when asked if he's frustrated with not being as involved with the offense as the Jets have lost their last two games). But at the end of the day it comes down to winning and losing. Throughout my experience, when things go right, I tend to have a part in that, and when it doesn’t, it seems avoidable. That's my main frustration that may show on the TV or something like that, but I don't want it to ever be misconstrued. It all comes from a place in my heart of wanting to win. I am biased, but it also comes from experience where I've played my part in that. It's frustrating, for sure, because I want to have an impact and I want to help the team," Wilson said.
Quarterback Geno Smith still has to read the defense and protect the football, but Wilson's effectiveness against man coverage gives New York a matchup worth testing. Getting its best receiver involved more consistently shouldn't mean forcing throws into danger; it means finding opportunities to use a proven strength rather than letting it go to waste.
Another opportunity awaits in Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders. We'll see what happens once that one gets going.
