A stellar start to the season for Canadiens rookie goaltender Jacob Fowler was derailed in unbelievable fashion on Tuesday night, with the Jets piecing together a rapid four-goal comeback in a matter of minutes.

Trailing 4-0 with under three minutes remaining, Winnipeg scored four times at the Bell Centre to force overtime, where momentum carried the Jets to a win.

It was the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history: before Tuesday, teams were 0-9,652-0 when trailing by at least four goals with less than three minutes remaining, ESPN's John Buccigross noted and 0-3,257 when scoreless in that scenario.

The comeback was an NHL first by some measures, leaving the Canadiens shell-shocked in front of their home crowd.

Here's a closer look at the Jets' historic comeback.

Jets 4-goal comeback vs. Canadiens

The Jets scored four goals in a span of two minutes and six seconds deep into the third period on Tuesday night, not scoring the first until there were only two minutes and 39 seconds on the clock in regulation.

Tyrel Bauer struck first, followed by a goal from Morgan Barron to cut the deficit to two. In the final minute of the period, Kyle Connor scored twice, 27 seconds apart, to stun the Canadiens and send the game to overtime.

Once the momentum starts shifting like that, it's hard to get it back. Montreal conceded the game-winning goal to Dylan Samberg three minutes and 30 seconds into overtime.

After the deflating loss, Canadiens star Cole Caufield said "guys thought the game was over."

"We had a four-goal lead," Caufield told reporters. "There's no excuse for this. It's terrible."

The Canadiens gave up 47 shots on goal in the win. Until the final three minutes, though, the rookie Fowler handled what came his way, as he has done throughout the early weeks of the season.

The start to the season has been much more challenging for the Jets -- they entered Tuesday fresh off a 7-0 loss to the Hurricanes -- but if there were ever a way to change the mood, a four-goal comeback is certainly on.
