After a 28-24 defeat to the Denver Broncos, Kansas City faces questions about its short-yardage plan. The Chiefs reached Denver’s 1-yard line late in the game but failed to score, and Mahomes made his position clear by using his own body in those situations.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes states he is ready to run sneaks

The Chiefs have not used Mahomes on a quarterback sneak since 2019, when he dislocated his right kneecap on a sneak against Denver. Asked about the final goal-line call, Mahomes said Kansas City wanted Kenneth Walker III to attack the gap.

“Well, if I do that, it better work, that’s my reaction. But no, I understand people, when you watch the film and see stuff that you want to go out there and make it happen, but obviously the play call is what we called, and we want to execute that play.” Mahomes said in the full player transcript, “And they were able to stunt and kind of get people in position that were-(RB) Kenneth (Walker) wasn’t able to get going downhill and score a touchdown and everything like that, but that’s stuff that we evaluate, too. We learn from, and then we try to be better from it in the next few weeks. And so, like I said, the only thing I have is if I do call my own number, it’s got to work, so that’s something that I’ll think about in the future.”

Mahomes later gave a direct answer about the sneak itself. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to win. Quarterback sneak, whatever it is, it’s not like I’m scared to put my body on the line. That’s how I’ve played. It’s gotten me in trouble sometimes, and sometimes it’s helped the team.”

Kansas City held a 24-13 fourth-quarter lead, but Denver scored 15 unanswered points. Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns.

The short-yardage problem is broader than one failed series. ESPN reported that Kansas City had converted 20 of 34 third- and fourth-down plays needing two yards or less. Inside the 5-yard line, the Chiefs had scored two touchdowns on 13 rushing attempts.

Andy Reid has protected Mahomes since the 2019 injury, but the current numbers keep the choice under review. The Chiefs fell to 5-2, behind Denver in the AFC West. They face the New York Jets next.
