“You shouldn’t have waited,” he said as he went into the bedroom to wash up and change.
Sita Devi didn’t reply and went to the kitchen to warm up some milk. Ramashankar liked a glass of warm milk before retiring.
“So how was your day?” asked Ramu, as he sat beside his wife and picked up the glass she had set on a nearby table.
“Renu and her husband are dead, shot by unknown persons last night,” stated his wife.
Ramu wasn’t surprised. His wife subscribed to several Hindi newspapers, national and local, and all major TV news channels.
“Yes, very sad, very unfortunate,” commented Ramu. “Vishwapati was very upset.”
“Such severe punishment for disobedience?” asked Sita Devi gently.
Ramu was silent for a while. Then he replied more abruptly than was his wont when addressing his wife.
“Let us not go there, please. A tragedy has happened, and I know you will be very upset given your relationship, but it’s done, and we have to put it behind us. I don’t want to talk about it.”
