This Sunday, the New England Patriots (5-3) return to the comfort of Gillette Stadium for one of their most premier matchups of the 2026 regular season: an interconference showdown with the Green Bay Packers (5-3). New England’s second game against NFC North opponents this fall is ripe with intrigue on the field and on the sidelines, setting up for one of the most entertaining bouts of the year league-wide.
On today’s episode of the Patriots Roundtable Podcast, hosts Eddie Marotta and Tyler Geis preview the Patriots’ upcoming home stand against Green Bay — examining matchups that could swing the game’s result, keys to victory on both sides of the football, and predicting the game’s outcome.
On the sidelines, all eyes will be fixed on two New England legends. Tom Brady makes his return to Foxboro on the FOX broadcast, and Rob Gronkowski will be inducted into the Patriots’ Hall of Fame as part of the weekend’s festivities.
Between the white lines, Sunday’s matchup pits two teams with eerily similar identities against each other. Drake Maye and Jordan Love are both quarterbacks who have excelled at threatening defenses with downfield passing, while each team’s defensive structure is built upon taking away those opportunities for their opponents.
For New England’s offense, it will be another in a string of games where the health of key skill position players will be closely monitored. A.J. Brown and TreVeyon Henderson have continued to miss practice time, and have now been joined by Hunter Henry — who was limited to just eight offensive snaps before suffering a foot injury in Week 8. Those absences didn’t seem to matter much for Maye and the passing attack, however, as the third-year gunslinger continued his recent excellence with another efficient performance that featured two 40-yard passing touchdowns. He’ll need to carry that success over into this weekend, while the offense as a whole will look to limit the turnovers that have plagued them against a defense that leads the league in takeaways.
On the defensive side of the football, the Patriots’ secondary will be challenged by an equally aggressive passing offense. Love leads all quarterbacks with 52 attempts on passes 20-plus yards downfield, and has the tools along the boundary to create explosive plays in an instant. Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, and Tucker Kraft each present stylistically different predicaments for New England’s coaching staff to gameplan for, but that’s been a strength so far this season. Much like the Patriots, the Packers have struggled to find consistency on the ground — ranking at or near the bottom of the league in nearly every rushing statistical or analytical category.
This will be a game that places a heavy emphasis on quarterback play on both sides — strategies that have served both teams well through eight weeks of the regular season. Who remains standing by the end of the evening could come down to one final possession, or who can force the opposition into critical mistakes. For New England, they’ll look to create those errors, rather than being forced to overcome them — an internal battle that’s yet to be resolved.
