Reese Duprey scored 20 points, and Eliana Trumper added 16 as the Nighthawks got the job done offensively and defensively in a 55-30 win.

“We’ve been talking for a few weeks now that we’re focused on creating turnovers, tipping passes and using our athletic ability to get out and run,” Peru coach Ryon O’Connell said.

“I think that’s our best feature. We have girls who can get up and down the floor and finish in transition.”

Peru jumped out to a 28-10 lead at the half with Duprey leading the way with 11 points. She then added nine more in the third, including five-for-five from the foul line.

“Our confidence level was definitely high, but we knew we needed to show up and work hard,” she said. “They’re very athletic, and we knew they were going to come out hard. So we knew we had to come out really hard and still play our game no matter what.”

Trumper scored seven of her points in the first half to help Peru take its commanding lead and tallied nine more in the second half. The Nighthawks were able to take a 45-27 advantage after three.

“I think over the course of the whole season, we’ve worked hard, we’ve worked together and we’ve kept our bonds strong, which has really helped us to get where we are now,” Trumper said.

Bella Berry added eight points and Violet Berry six for the Nighthawks.

Lucy Conroy tossed in 12 points to lead the Eagles, who dropped 48-24 and 64-36 contests to Peru during the regular season. Julia Conroy added six points.

Next up for the Nighthawks will be opposing Class B champion Saranac Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Champions Challenge at CCC.

Peru (19-2), which is ranked 10th in the state, will then play in a regional final, set for March 13 at 5 p.m. at Hudson Valley Community College against an opponent yet to be determined.

“Regardless of the situation we’re in, we have to play hard to prepare ourselves for when we have to play extra hard,” O’Connell said. “That’s what we’ve been doing in practice and in tonight’s game. We just tend to keep playing hard and no relaxing because we can’t relax in the big game.”
