It took until one of the follow-up waves of free agency, but the New England Patriots did eventually address their offensive tackle depth. Earlier this week, the team signed five-year veteran James Hudson to a one-year, $1.4 million contract.

Instant grades: Patriots sign OT James Hudson III
Bernd Buchmasser: The Patriots needed to bolster their offensive tackle depth, and signing Hudson was a fairly inexpensive way to do so. He also brings some starter experience to the table and can serve as a swing tackle behind Will Campbell and Morgan Moses. The team remains in the market for more help in the draft, but he at the least raises the team’s floor — albeit only slightly. | Grade:C
Pat Lane: The Patriots signed an offensive lineman who set history last year, becoming the first player to ever be penalized four times on one drive. While that’s obviously terrible, Hudson does provide decent depth and comes at a very cheap price. If the Patriots bring in some rookies, or if one of their guys on the roster takes a step forward, Hudson is easily releasable. | Grade: C–
Andrew Guindon: Hudson has a wealth of experience throughout his first four years. He started 17 games for the Browns during his first four years, appearing in 49 total, and also starting for the Giants twice last season. However, Hudson has had some penalty issues in the past. Spending to bring back Vederian Lowe as the team’s swing tackle may turn out to be a better option. | Grade: C–
