US PODCASTERS CRITICISED FOR COMMENTS ABOUT OSCAR PISTORIUS

This week, US presenters of The Big Silly Trivia Game podcast were criticised by many South Africans over a clip of them discussing Oscar Pistorius’s murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Hosts Natalie Shine and Savannah DesOrmeau shared several factual errors in a viral clip, including the claim that the tragedy occurred in Australia.

In the background, a narrator claimed that a home invader startled the couple who lay in bed, and that both Reeva and Oscar went looking for the intruder.

During the highly-publicised murder trial, the court heard how there was no break-in or intruder at Oscar’s upmarket Silver Woods Country Estate home.

Prosecutors also presented evidence that  Oscar had cold-bloodedly killed Reeva, who had hid in the bathroom out of fear from her “jealous” and “trigger-happy” boyfriend. Oscar fired several shots through the bathroom door.

In the comments section, the podcasters were condemned by many South Africans over their commentary of the high-profile crime.

Sports broadcaster Andile Ncube responded: “Wow! So much misinformation in a 30-second clip. All this could’ve been avoided with a quick Google search!”

Fellow broadcaster Elma Smit commented: “[Oscar Pistorius] 100% killed her… shot multiple times through a locked toilet cubicle door. Now dating a girl who has an uncanny resemblance to the woman he killed.”

Radio personality Carryn-Ann Nel added, “Firstly, this happened in South Africa, not Australia. Court evidence showed she was in the bathroom; there was never an intruder.”

WHEN DOES HIS PRISON SENTENCE END?

Oscar Pistorius is serving a murder sentence for killing Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

In September 2014, he was initially convicted of culpable homicide, but this was later upgraded to murder in December 2015. At the time, he was handed a six-year prison sentence.

However, the Supreme Court of Appeal increased his jail term to 13 years and five months following an unsuccessful appeal in November 2017.

His murder sentence will expire in December 2029.
