Commanders roster moves: Washington releases second-year WR

· Yahoo Sports

Every year, it seems, the Washington Commanders have one young receiver who is the focus of offseason and training camp clips, getting fans excited about their future. In 2025, it was undrafted free agent Ja'Corey Brooks.

On Tuesday, as Washington opened its second week of OTAs, the Commanders released Brooks. Replacing Brooks on Washington's 90-man roster is veteran tight end Anthony Firkser.

Firkser, 31, is a nine-year NFL veteran who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Harvard. Firkser has spent time with the Jets, Chiefs, Titans, Falcons, Patriots and Lions. He has had multiple stints with the Chiefs and Lions. It was in Detroit where Firkser was a teammate of new Washington offensive coordinator David Blough.

Over the course of his NFL career, Firkser has 123 receptions for 1,260 yards and five touchdowns. The 6-foot-2, 245-pounder is known as more of a move tight end, but his pass blocking metrics are impressive, per Pro Football Focus.

The tight end position is crowded for the Commanders. Washington's top three tight ends are Chig Okonkwo, John Bates and Ben Sinnott, with Colson Yankoff also seeing some time on offense, but more known for his work on special teams. The Commanders also have Lawrence Cager, who they really like. Washington has kept four tight ends the last two seasons.

As for the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Brooks, the Commanders have Terry McLaurin, Treylon Burks, Jaylin Lane, Luke McCaffrey, rookie Antonio Williams and Van Jefferson ahead of him. Washington released Brooks during final cuts last August and quickly re-signed him to the practice squad. He was active for one game last season and did not record any stats.
