Sunderland Are In Talks To Land This Ligue 1 Midfielder: What Will He Add To Le Bris’ Side?

In a recent report, Media Foot claimed that Sunderland are in talks to land Olympique Marseille midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia. It has been mentioned that the Black Cats are eyeing a move to bring the Central African Republic international to the Stadium of Light this off-season.

Kondogbia’s Recent Season In French Football

Kondogbia served as an important squad player for Marseille last season, but missed a lot of games for them in Ligue 1 because of injuries. The 33-year-old played in 17 matches for the French outfit in the previous campaign, securing one assist in various competitions.

The Central African Republic talent is currently one of the most experienced defensive midfielders in Ligue 1. Hence, he could be a real asset for Sunderland if they can snap him up on a short-term contract in this transfer window.

His current deal at Marseille is set to expire at the end of next season, which could open the door for the Black Cats to recruit him on the cheap this summer.

What Will Kondogbia Add To Sunderland Boss Regis Le Bris’ Side?

Kondogbia is a good tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and is a good passer of the ball.

The Central African Republic international can even engineer the odd chance for his teammates from midfield. Kondogbia is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also serve as a centre-back or as a box-to-box midfielder if asked to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can cope with the high intensity of the Premier League if the Black Cats manage to sign him this summer.

Kondogbia would add more bite and steel to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ midfield in the short term. He is good enough to serve as a good, rotational piece in the Wearside club’s squad next season.

At 33, Kondogbia might still have a couple of good seasons left in him to play at a high level. Therefore, it makes sense for Sunderland to try and land him on a short-term deal in this transfer window.
