Broncos New Offensive Coordinator Has Been Dubbed ‘A Mad Scientist’ By Receiver

The Denver Broncos are making a lot of changes offensively, and the man behind many of them is new coordinator Davis Webb. He was in demand during the off-season before he took his current job, and Webb commented about the interview process he went through in a piece written by Nick Kosmider of The Athletic, saying “that helped me learn a lot about myself.”
Webb is now applying that learning during OTAs and minicamp, and he also stated that this was the job he always wanted.

“Where do I sign?” Webb said Thursday after the Broncos’ OTA practice, offering his first public comments since stepping into that pivotal new role. “There was no doubt. I didn’t want to leave here. I love it here. I love the players we have here. I love the staff we have here. I love the ownership we have here. I love the front office. There was no doubt in my mind I wanted to be here.”
Webb is 31, and his experience includes being a college and NFL quarterback, which has allowed him to work with some of the league’s brightest offenisve minds. He's also the son of a high school coach, and the way he goes about his job has led receiver Courtland Sutton to describe him as “a mad scientist.”
“I know that he’s ready,” Sutton said. “There’s not a (question) behind it. He’s ready. I’m looking forward to learning from him and picking his offensive brain.”
One point Webb has made is that he's working with in the offensive system of coach Sean Payton. The Broncos won't be reinventing what they do around quarterback Bo Nix, who has guided the team to 24 victories in the two seasons he’s been a starter.
But Webb is also making his own additions. The biggest one, according to Kosmider, is to create catch-and-run opportunities across the middle of the field.
“We’ll kind of feel that as we go,” Webb said of what he envisions for Denver’s offensive identity this season. “I think the (2025) Rams are the best example. It went into, like, Week 6 (before) they started playing a lot more heavy, 13 personnel. I think we’ll grow and adapt as the season goes. …
“We started in February as a coaching staff (saying), ‘Hey, let’s look at the last two years since Bo’s taken over. What are we good at? What do we need to look at? What’s going on around the league? Who do we play?’ So it’s been a combination of a lot of things.”
The big focus of the media so far has been on whether Webb will call plays. But he’s emphasizing something different, saying he wants to make sure “we get the bad football out of our system now.”
Webb is also at the beginning of the transformation process, which means there’s another point of emphasis that’s just as important right now with an offense that frequently turned static last season.
“Our whole deal is let’s score some points, let’s have some fun,” Webb said. “Let’s have a different attitude on offense.”
