FAIRFIELD — One day earlier, Fairfield would have needed aquatic devices to navigate their home diamond.

Between rain that fell over passing storms throughout the middle of the week, the home field of the Trojan baseball team was under water. Several inches of rain forced several hours of work to get their diamond ready to make up a Southeast Conference contest with Keokuk on Friday.

"We had water standing all the way from behind the field to the home plate area," Fairfield head baseball coach Josh Allison said. "We would have needed canoes and kayaks to get across the diamond on Thursday."

After putting in the work to get the field ready, Allison watched the Fairfield baseball team dominate on the diamond for the fourth time in conference play this season. Five straight hits to open the contest set the tone for the Trojans in a 15-0, four-inning win over the Chiefs, lifting Fairfield to a 4-0 start in conference play this season.

"They told us they were our here getting the field ready for four hours starting at 8:30 a.m. I feel like they were probably here all day starting at 8:30 to get this field ready," Fairfield senior Dain Burkhart said after picking up the win on the mound allowing one hit over three shutout innings. "We saw photos of what the field looked like on Thursday. When we got here, it didn't looked like it had rained out here at all. They were actually out there watering the field.

"I have no idea how it works. I'm in complete awe. I know our field drains pretty well, but if our coaches wanted to get this game in, they were going to do whatever it took to make that happen. If they're willing to do that for us, we've got to be willing as a team to work just as hard to be successful when we get on the field."

Fairfield, now 10-3 overall, hosts 11-2 Burlington in a key Southeast Conference doubleheader on Monday. The Grayhounds are also unbeaten in conference play with five wins in five conference games.
